For simplicity, we use the generic term “fentanyl” to describe the illegal version and its analogues, unless otherwise indicated. This term is also used to describe all reported involvement of substances from multiple cause of death (MCD) category T40.4 (synthetic opioids excluding methadone), which experts point to as being made up as “primarily illicit fentanyls”.
